Climate

Pankisi Valley's climate is similar to that of the southern Italian Alps. Higher up in the valley, the climate is more severe and colder. The best time to visit Pankisi Valley is from April to October. Early spring brings pleasantly cool weather, while May is warm. The temperature increases from June to September, making this an ideal time for hiking and horseback riding in the mountains. Autumn transforms the valley into a tapestry of colours and feels colder. Winter is cold with spells of snow.

Celebrations & traditions

Peristsvaleba or Tbatanoba

Peristsvaleba is celebrated on August 19th. It was originally a Christian holiday but it is also celebrated by Muslim Kists. A feast is organised to celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, when the grasses start to yellow, and villagers go up to the alpine pastures on Tbatana mountain to feast together in gratitude for a good year.

9th of May

This public holiday commemorates the end of the Second World War. Kists honor this day with community and family gatherings, sometimes with horse races, performances and wrestling competitions.

Pankisoba

The Pankisoba Festival is known as the 'Day of Pankisi Valley' and takes place in summer but the date might vary from year to year. The festival hosts a range of entertainments including horse racing, wrestling, traditional folk music, singing, and dancing. The festival is organized by the local government with the support of the local community.

Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and is the holiest month for the Islamic community. The fast starts at sunrise and ends at sunset. Fasting facilitates Muslims in their quest for mental and spiritual clarity. The fast lasts for 30 days and ends with a three day celebration.
