Meet the team

Pankisi Valley Tourism & Development Association

PVTDA was established by Kist women in March 2018 with the aim of developing and promoting sustainable ecotourism, Kist culture and Pankisi Valley. PVTDA's role and work has reframed Pankisi Valley as a safe and desirable tourism destination in Georgia; changing the narrative, reshaping attitudes, and breaking down negative stereotypes and barriers.

The Association has built a broad network of supporters and stakeholders across Georgia and internationally, who understand and support its vision and aims. This includes NGOs, government officials, businesses, academics and others who appreciate the importance of developing the Kist community through tourism.

Our vision and goals

PVTDA is leading the way in creating and implementing a new vision for Pankisi Valley - to elevate Pankisi Valley and the Kist community onto the global stage, through promoting Kist culture and sustainable ecotourism.

The Association works to realize the full tourism potential of Pankisi Valley through the opportunities that tourism creates. By forging strong partnerships we are able to create resources and strategies to achieve our goals.

The Association plays a vital role in providing information, exchanging ideas, training and attracting investment. It emphasizes sustainable development through all its activities and projects. Education and raising awareness of environmental protection are fundamental principles and practices to the Association.

PVTDA represents and works in the best interests of the local community and is inclusive of all people. The Association’s work isn’t limited to Kist villages but extends its support to neighboring Georgian villages also.

A special place for special travelers

The emergence of tourism in Pankisi Valley has been the most significant turning point in its recent history. For the last decade tourism has been the principal catalyst for social and economic change. Tourism is the only industry in the valley.

In a region marred by mass unemployment, emigration, lack of opportunities, and stained by unwarranted media attention, the emergence of ecotourism has heralded new hope and opportunities for many people seeking to improve their lives.

To understand Pankisi Valley today one has to listen carefully to the experiences of those not only involved in ecotourism but from those that come from all corners of the globe to benefit from its rich offerings.

I have had the privilege to listen and speak to thousands of foreign tourists over the past decade. The views expressed to me unanimously echo this: "Pankisi Valley is the most peaceful, safest and interesting place they have visited in Georgia, and enthusiastically recommend it to others." It is therefore no surprise to learn that tourism is thriving here and the world’s leading travel guide books feature Pankisi Valley as a notable travel destination in Georgia.

PVTDA recognises the importance of sustainable ecotourism and its benefits, particularly for our community and this region. This awareness drives our efforts to provide training and employment opportunities to local people, and gives the much needed stimulus for harnessing Pankisi Valley’s full potential to accelerate socio-economic growth and prosperity.

To this end, PVTDA is working hard to establish the infrastructure and services to attract and support tourists seeking an authentic experience of Georgia.

Pankisi Valley is a special place for special people, so I welcome you to venture to a truly special travel destination in Georgia for unforgettable experiences.
