By public transport

Public transport is safe, comfortable, and inexpensive for making long journeys in Georgia. The signage for destination place names is mostly in Georgian. It would be useful to learn the Georgian alphabet and numbers or have references close at hand. See Useful Words & Phrases.

Minibuses from Tbilisi to Pankisi Valley (Duisi, Jokolo, Birkiani and Dzibakhevi) depart from Ortachala Station in Tbilisi at 07.30 am and 14.20 pm daily, or from the Chachava Street next to the Isani metro station at 07:40 am and 14:30 pm. The travel time is about 3 hours and the fare is approximately 12 to 15 GEL. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to secure a seat.


The Ortachala Bus Station is located 2.5 kilometers from the Old Town in the south-eastern part of Tbilisi. Minibuses to Pankisi Valley park at the front of the bus station in the open parking area next to the main road. There is a small convenience shop, bench, and toilets nearby. The bus station is easily reached by public transport and taxi from any point in the city.


Minibuses to Akhmeta and Telavi depart hourly from the Ortachala from 07:30 am. From Telavi or Akhmeta, you can easily get a minibus or taxi to take you the rest of the way to Pankisi Valley.


Your host in Pankisi Valley can also check and confirm minibus times. Returning from Pankisi Valley to Tbilisi, ask your host to reserve your seat on the minibus or to arrange a private taxi.

By car

It is easy to rent a car in Tbilisi to travel more comfortably and flexibly. If you hire a 4WD vehicle for offroad trips you can reach sights around Pankisi Valley like Khadori waterfall or Tbatana mountain. However, a 4WD car is not mandatory to get to Pankisi Valley itself.


CAUTION: If you are driving please ensure to lower your speed upon entering Duisi. Children, cows and horses frequently cross the main road. Extra caution is required at night due to limited street lighting. There are no street lights within the villages. To improve road safety and reduce casualties, new speed humps have been introduced on the main road. Some are marked and visible, others are not.


Distances & Times

Tbilisi to Telavi 93 km – about 1 hour 10 minutes (via Gombori Pass)

Telavi to Akhmeta 27 km – about 30 minutes

Akhmeta to Jokolo 16 km – about 20 minutes

By taxi

A shared taxi can be hired from Tbilisi near Isani metro station to Jokolo for 100 GEL (carrying a maximum of 4 persons). The price is 25 GEL per passenger. Depending on the size of the group this is an economical option offering more comfort and opportunities to stop. If you are a group of less than four you may have to wait until other passengers arrive or pay a little extra for the vacant seat(s). The journey time is shorter than by minibus. It is recommended to travel during daylight hours.
